چکیده

Abstract This paper presents analyses of drifters with drogues at different depths – 1, 10, 30, 50 m that were deployed in the Mediterranean Sea to investigate frontal subduction and upwelling. Drifter trajectories used estimate divergence, vorticity, vertical velocity, finite-size Lyapunov exponents (FTLEs), balance terms vorticity equation. The divergence are O( f ) change sign along trajectories. Vertical velocity is O(1 mm/s), increases depth, indicates predominant upwelling isolated downwelling events, sometimes changes between 1 m. Vortex stretching one of, but not only, significant term balance. 2D FTLEs 2 × 10 −5 1/s after day, twice larger than a 400-m-resolution numerical model. 3D 50% dominated by shear horizontal velocity. Bootstrapping suggests uncertainty levels ~10% time-mean absolute values for vorticity. Analysis simulated model drifter-based estimates close Eulerian estimates, except when get aligned into long filaments. Drifter-based differs deeper depths. errors largely due lateral separation depths, partially only measuring 4 Overall, this demonstrates how drifters, heretofore restricted near-surface observations, can be learn about flow properties throughout upper layer water column.

Blood flow measurements at different depths using photoplethysmography and laser Doppler techniques.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE This study has evaluated a multi-parametric system combining laser Doppler flowmetry and photoplethysmography in a single probe for the simultaneous measurement of blood flow at different depths in the tissue. This system will be used to facilitate the understanding of pressure ulcer formation and in the evaluation of pressure ulcer mattresses. METHODS The blood flow in the...

Design of Lagrangian Drifters for Ocean Monitoring

Lagrangian drifters are oceanographic devices used to study circulation patterns in the ocean. The devices are typically passive, which means that they have no actuators to initiate motion. They are mainly driven by the ocean currents. A drifter, as depicted in Fig. 1, in principle consists of a surface float and a drogue connected via tether. The surface float provides the necessary buoyancy t...

Observing ocean heat content using satellite gravity and altimetry

[1] A method for combining satellite altimetry observations with satellite measurements of the Earth’s time-varying gravity to give improved estimates of the ocean’s heat storage is presented. Over the ocean the time-variable component of the geoid can be related to the time-varying bottom pressure. The methodology of estimating the ocean’s time-varying heat storage using altimetric observation...
